Shin Joong Tae
신중태

Shin Joong Tae's "Strata Landscape" paintings deal with the horizon — horizontal strata built up both across and into the canvas. Thick, repeated brushwork turns the surface into a physical substance reminiscent of Jean Fautrier's haute pâte, over which bands of brighter yellows and blues stack like field and sky.
Rather than depicting specific objects, Shin expresses spontaneously arising color and the emotion of the moment, layering matière to evoke landscapes accumulated in memory — and inviting each viewer's imagination to complete the picture. He graduated from Seoul National University's department of Western painting, and held the solo exhibition "Strata Landscape" at Soohoh Gallery in 2022.
