Hwang Ji-hyun Solo Exhibition: Vines of Lilith
Aug 21, 2024 – Sep 3, 2024 · 수호갤러리

The artist gives immediate, improvisational form to the impulse of oppression experienced as a woman. Her paintings render women — herself, women around her, women from art history — alongside motifs such as the womb, flowers, houses, and roads, transformed through hybrid forms, varied color arrangements, and repeated, overlapping lines. "Vines of Lilith" is both a representation of the self within society as a woman and a fluid response to life's unannounced changes and collisions, created as "allegorical painting" to expand the expressive possibilities of the form.
Hwang Ji-hyun holds a BA, MA, and PhD in painting, and researches the moments of empathy and collision experienced by women, introducing "allegory" into her painting practice. This exhibition focuses on the oppression, conflict, and life changes women face in contemporary society.
