Seokwon Sa

Seokwon Sa (b. 1960) is known for tigers and other animals rendered in a deliberately unpolished style rooted in Korean folk painting (minhwa) — fierce yet naive tigers, birds atop tigers' heads, tigers wandering bamboo groves. He studied at Dongguk University and its graduate school, and at Université Paris VIII. His grand-prize wins at the Korean National Art Exhibition and student art competitions, and repeated selection as a top popular artist, mark a career built on capturing the essence of his subjects with minimal, forceful brushwork.
