Daiwon Lee

Daiwon Lee (1921–2005) ranked among the ten great masters of modern Korean art. Unlike many peers who turned to monochrome, minimalism or abstraction in the 1950s-60s, he remained devoted to figurative landscape painting — orchards, mountains and fields, especially his own farm in Paju — rendered in bright pointillist strokes reminiscent of Seurat and Signac, without regard for classical perspective. He served as president of Hongik University and chairman of the National Academy of Arts of Korea.
