Younglim Choi
최영림
Younglim Choi (1916–1985) painted the warmth of Korean folk sentiment, portraying mothers, sisters and beloved women with an earthy, healthy beauty. He studied at the Pacific Art School in Tokyo and taught at Chung-Ang University's College of Arts, among other posts. His early 1950s work favored somber cubist forms reflecting wartime hardship; from the 1960s he turned to Korean folktales, mixing sand and earth into his canvases to achieve a distinctive ochre-toned texture evoking Korean sensibility.
